How listing order actually works, what activity signals mean, and where paid promotion affects visibility. Inclusion in this directory is not an independent product endorsement.
Topic previews and category listings show the newest directory records first, with an ID tie-breaker for stable pagination. They do not boost paid placements. A listing date is not a product launch date or a verification of product quality.
The tools directory places Featured listings first, then orders by the listing's contact-eligibility flag and your chosen sort. The default is newest listing; popular uses recorded views, trending uses recorded outbound clicks, and rated uses the stored average community rating. These are not independent quality scores.
Consider the number of reviews alongside the average rating. An unrated product is not necessarily worse than a reviewed one. Directory views and clicks reflect activity on Startup List, not overall market share, revenue or independent testing.
Editorial topics group related categories without changing a product's assigned category. A category becomes eligible for indexing when it belongs to a topic and has at least three listings. Sparse or unclassified categories remain browsable but are noindex and excluded from the sitemap.
